HISTORY OF FUTSAL

Indoor soccer has been played in some sort of version, dating back to the 1200’s, in England. The first known recorded game was in Canada, in 1851. Like most sports, the game meandered on as a recreation activity until officially being recognised as a sport in 1931.

In that year a young schoolteacher in Montevideo, Uruguay, Juan Carlos Ceriani, devised and wrote the rules for a five-a-side indoor version of soccer for youth competition in YMCAs. There were two main reasons for his action. One, the very first Soccer World Cup had just been played in the country and this had created a large amount of interest in soccer and two, Uruguay in 1931 had a long wet season which saw many soccer teams and players unable to take part in the regular outdoor game, and thus were looking for another way of playing their sport.

In 1958 the first international body, FIFUSA, was formed with a young Joual De Havelange (later to be the head of the soccer body FIFA) the first president. In 1988 FIFA, the international soccer body took over the sport and held the first FIFA Men’s World Cup in Holland in 1989. This was followed by 1992 in Hong Kong, 1996 in Spain, 2000 in Guatamala and the next in 2004 in Taiwan.

The word FUTSAL is the international term used for the game, and is an abbreviation of ‘FUTEBOL DE SALO’. It is derived from the Spanish or Portuguese word for "soccer", FUTbol or FUTebol, and the Portuguese or Spanish word for "room", SALo or SALa, giving ‘football in a room’.

For youth and local club competition the game is played on a basketball or netball size court, usually 20 minutes each way run of the clock. At elite level it is played on a 40 metre long by 20 metre wide court (similar to European Handball), two halves of 20 minutes, stop the clock. The goals are 2 metres high and three metres wide and the ball used is a size 4 that has a dead bounce, so that the ball does not bounce too high.

SOUTH AUSTRALIA FUTSAL AND THE STINGRAYS

Adelaide Stingrays Futsal Club offer the Brazilian approach to teaching Futsal, bringing you all the characteristics of modern Futsal in a fun atmoshere. The rapid growth in number of children participating in Futsal has a huge demand and popularity in this country.

Our Junior & Youth Futsal programmes quickly develop skills required for soccer: - balance, motor ability, agility and co-ordination, ball mastery, accurate and quick passing and receiving, perception insight and awareness.

Children learn through repetition and practice in small areas this occurs naturally. As Futsal is fast and action packed, fitness is improved while learning and having fun. Futsal is the only FIFA approved five-a-side soccer game. It is played on a basketball style court, with no walls and a low bouncing ball, necessitating players to use their skills rather than the balls bounce to propel it.

Great soccer stars such as Pele, Ronaldinho, Maradona, Denilson, Zico and Ronaldo grew up playing the game and attribute Futsal with developing their silky skills. Futsal is played by an estimated 30 million players throughout the world is soon to be an Olympic sport.

Adelaide Stingrays Director of Coaching

  • PROFFESSIONAL – Adelaide Stingrays Futsal staff are trained both internally and externally in running tournaments and competitions at a variety of indoor centres. We have Futsal Developing Officers in the North, South, West, East & Country surrounding areas.
  • EXPERIENCED - Adelaide Stingrays Futsal have been running tournaments and competitions for 5 years from clubs of ten teams to 120 teams and competitions of up to 500 teams.
  • REPUTABLE - Over that period Adelaide Stingrays Futsal has regularly hired a number of schools and council facilities and has a close working relationship with them.
  • RELIABLE - South Australia Futsal is not a fly by night organisation out to make quick money from the sport. We realise that a new club will run at a financial loss for the first three years and have the structure and backing to do this. Our mission is to develop the sport and to provide a quality inexpensive recreation, whilst offering at the same time an elite pathway in the sport for those who wish it.

Many organizations that build new centres make the mistake of taking on as hirers, small Commercial operators, whose sole intent is to make some quick money from running the sport.

They often have no insurance, do not insist on compulsory accident insurance for players and offer no elite pathways or technical training in futsal.

This can work in the short term, but in the medium term, we have often had to

come in, take over and clean up the problems left behind to

keep the sport going. The club has it’s own $10,000,000 public liability policy and it is compulsory for all players to register with the association so as to be covered by association’s

Accident insurance. All our centre managers have first aid certification and Working with Children card. All regional and state coaches also hold a minimum of Level One accreditation.

  • OTHER BENEFITS---We like to work closely with schools and centres where we run competitions. Thus we encourage them to let us run free coaching clinics, referees and coaching courses and participate in community functions, for example come and try days, fetes. We particularly will help schools organise teams for school Futsal titles. Any goals or balls we leave at a facility are also for the free use of the school or centre.
  • When building or renovating your centre we can also provide free advice on design and line markings, and provide any necessary letters of support.
